In the Walton et al. study, they used computerized cognitive training tasks targeting executive function, such as the Attention Process Training-III software, and computerized Sudoku.
Regarding which method is better, I found this RCT which compared computerized training to paper-and-pencil based training, and found the computerized group had larger improvements (https://doi.org/10.1007/s40520-020-01665-2). It’s quite a small study with a specific software, so not the strongest evidence, but based on motor learning principles we know that a method that is more engaging, provides timely and relevant feedback, and adapts difficulty dynamically will work better.
