I have been diagnosed with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) similar to Parkinson’s. Does anyone know of any studies for this condition? I am thinking of stem cell treatment (offshore) and wonder if there is any value in this?

Is there a negative impact from higher levels of iron in the blood?

Hey Gregg, Thanks for your question. On behalf of Kelly, she says the following:
There are some medical conditions that lead to very high levels of iron in the blood and therefore accumulation in some body organs, in particular haemochromatosis. Treatment for this condition involves removing some blood, such as through blood donation, or using an iron cheltor medication to help the body remove iron. Iron levels within the brain have been shown to be higher in some diseases like Parkinson’s disease, however this is not necessarily associated with high iron levels in the blood but is due to local metabolism and other functions of nerve cells in the brain.

Whether reducing iron levels altered neurological disease is not known, there are some clinical trials occurring in this space to answer this question. These need to be monitored carefully as there are real risks associated with iron deficiency states, or low iron, in the blood. It is not recommended to use these types of treatments or aim for an iron deficiency state outside a clinical trial as low iron levels can promote fatigue, neuropathy (nerve ending damage) and muscle weakness which may worsen balance and contribute to other significant medical conditions.

    Thanks Kelly,

So much information, covering so many factors, but at least your team are moving forward and giving those with PD hope.

Very interesting. I have PD and interested in taking part in clinical trials but don’t believe in animal experiments for ethical reasons, particularly on primates but also for the reason (as seen in one of the trials above), they are not always an indicator of how drugs will behave in the human model and inaccurate. Are there trials I could become involved in that don’t use animals?
